Writing for the Social Sciences
The best part about meeting new people is getting to know more about a person. The many experiences and different life stories people have helps grasp a bigger picture of how different we are. Understanding how different we can be, allows us to be seen as individuals, and as we learn more about each other sometimes we can connect to their story or personality. When I first talked to Gabrelle Adams, I realized she has a sweet tone in her voice. She speaks very clearly and gives off bright energy although we were both tired. We were partnered up to interview and write about each other.
Gabrelle was born on January 16 in Guyana and goes by the nickname Gabby. Getting to know Gabby, I have learned that she’s a kind-hearted, hardworking person. In our first zoom meeting, I learned about her favorite things and what she would describe herself as. Her favorite season is autumn because of its neutral weather. It’s not too cold or hot and she likes to admire nature. She enjoys parks or anywhere close to water because it’s very peaceful. To describe herself in one word, she refers to herself as an empath. She can be outgoing from time to time. I realized, getting to know these little things about her, I can relate to all of these. I favor autumn for its neutral weather and enjoy going to parks and beaches to take pictures. As for being an empath, I can understand that too. Depending on the situation I choose whether to be outgoing.
Referring to career interests and what she does currently, Gabby is majoring in psychology, like me. She wanted to be a lawyer but psychology piqued her interest in possibly dealing with divorce. She currently works in a restaurant and admitted to dealing with rude people at times. Although she gets upset with this at times, she goes by a motto to “Be kind to people at all times, because you don’t know what people are going through.”
Gabby has lived in Guyana then moved to the U.S. 4 years ago. Guyana, as she described it is tropical, sunny, and rainy. Her lifestyle there involved her staying home or seeing friends. At first, when she came here, she was sad. She misses her family especially when it came to events that were special to her. Gabby describes a family as “Being there for you and supporting you during hard times.” Christmas is very special to her in Guyana. It’s completely different because she’s with family and friends. When she moved to America in November, she wasn’t satisfied with the different ways of celebrating in comparison. She also struggled with mental health issues when she moved. She told me she didn’t have these issues in Guyana. Gabby goes to therapy currently and personally enjoys it. Although she misses her family and dealing with problems along the way, on a more positive side, she finds the U.S helpful in implementing her independence and freedom to do more things. Gabby explained how in Guyana, she was mostly staying home. She still embraces her culture in America through the food her dad would bring back.
Learning about Gabrelle may have been a short experience but I found out much about her just from her telling her story. I learned that relating to taking on the role of a social scientist, me being an interviewer, was learning and trying the understand who Gabby is as a person.
